About

Panel is built to expand the comics form.

Comics are published digitally, they can scroll or swipe, but remain static. Panel brings motion, sound, interaction, and community into one connected platform, while keeping the comic—and the creator—at the center.

Technology and AI are changing how stories are made. Panel exists to bring structure to that change and to create new ways to make, publish, and read comics.

Approach

Research, evidence and real stories.

Abstract humanoid figure representing spatial and story intelligence for comics

Panel draws on cognition, visual language, game theory and human–computer interaction.

Our long-term mission is to develop spatial and story intelligence for comics—moving AI beyond isolated images toward an understanding of sequence, space, characters, and reader choice. The goal is not to automate authorship, but to help creators shape coherent stories while retaining creative control.

Community

A new language grows through the people who use it.

Panel brings together illustrators, writers, animators, publishers, and readers. Their talent and shared love of comics form the foundation of its growing community.

Creators keep ownership of their work and a direct relationship with their audience. Panel gives them the tools and space to create and publish.

A good form does not only carry an idea. It allows us to discover one.

Animated sequence of running figures from Panel’s early interactive-comic experiments

The path to Panel began when Ondřej Novák met illustrator Vojtěch Šeda at art school in 2003. Their collaboration led to two interactive comic games exploring how motion, sound, space, and reader choice could become part of comics.

2014

A black-and-white interactive comic that turns reading into play through animation, sound, puzzles, and reader input.

The project was an early experiment in treating the comic panel as an interactive space—expanding what comics could do while preserving the reader’s pace and the language of comics. That same question continues to guide Panel today.

2019

A point-and-click comic demo combining hand-drawn comics with animation, sound, chance, and reader interaction. The story follows a boy through two intertwined worlds, where reality and dreams, people and art begin to overlap.

Code-controlled loops, random variations, and reader choices make each playthrough slightly different. The project extended the earlier experiments by using sequence, layout, timing, and space as active parts of storytelling.
