Why a Comics Engine, Not Another Title

Panel began with a simple idea: make a comic that could move, respond and borrow some of the language of games.

For a while, the obvious goal was to create one title. A finished work could show what this new form might feel like. But it would also limit the idea to one story, one visual style and one set of creative decisions.

The more useful challenge was to build the system behind it.

Comics already have a strong language: panels, sequence, dialogue, rhythm and the space between. Panel keeps those elements at the centre.

That changes the question. Instead of deciding what one interactive comic should look like, Panel gives different creators the tools to find their own answers.

Creators can bring in finished artwork or create new material, shape scenes in a dynamic grid, add dialogue and motion, let readers trigger actions or make simple choices, and publish the result as an interactive story.

How Comics Make the World is the first complete story built with Panel. It is one example of what the engine can do — and a way to test it through a real project.

A title can present one answer.

An engine can make way for many.

Panel is now open to creators.
